"North of 60" DVDs

Introduction

In August of 2008, I received some very promising news about possible DVD releases of "North of 60." I was contacted by Echo Bridge Home Entertainment, the new licensees of the Alliance Atlantis video library. They were trying to gauge the marketability of the shows in that library and knew that I ran a website about "North of 60."

Echo Bridge informed me that one way they determine which shows might be worth releasing is by viewing the votes on TVShowsOnDVD.com. In case you aren't familiar with that site, it's well respected by studios and distributors. It's also convenient for fans, because you can express interest in all of your favorite shows in one place, instead of having to create a bunch of online petitions. So it was a good sign that we Nof60 fans got a clear invitation from Echo Bridge to make our feelings known through that website.

What not to do...

Unfortunately, just two days after I posted the above announcement on my Nof60 website, Gord Lacey, the owner of TVShowsOnDVD.com, had to suspend voting for Nof60 due to abuse of the voting system. For example, one person created eight different accounts. Now, even if by some chance it was an eight-person household, I seriously doubt that they really intended to buy eight sets of DVDs.

Gord reinstated the voting a few weeks later, but it is still vitally important that you play by the rules. I cannot emphasize too much that abuse of the voting system will damage the prospects of ever getting Nof60 released on DVD. If you try to "game" the voting, you will be hurting not only yourself, but also everyone else who desperately wants to buy Nof60 DVDs.

Do not create multiple accounts on TVShowsOnDVD.com. Do not do anything else to falsely inflate the vote. If Gord is forced to disable voting again, he may not be so willing to reinstate it, and we may permanently lose our opportunity to impress Echo Bridge with our enthusiasm for DVDs.

Of course, if there are multiple people in your family who would legitimately be interested in purchasing their own sets of Nof60 DVDs--maybe you have a sister in another state, or a kid at college--then by all means, urge them to create an account on Gord's site and indicate their interest. But don't make accounts for yourself, your spouse, your five-year-old, and your dog just to increase the number of votes for the show. Gord will know what you're doing and will disable the ability for any of us to vote on the show.

How to vote and make comments

Okay, now that you've read my rant, you can go to TVShowsOnDVD.com, register (if you haven't done so previously), and cast a vote for "North of 60"!

A few notes:

  • Yes, you do have to register to vote. That's a large part of why the site has a good reputation. People can't just log on anonymously and vote a hundred times. I'm assured by people who have been registered for years that the site owner, Gord Lacey, will not use your email address for anything other than legitimate purposes related to his website. You have the option of receiving or not receiving updates about the shows you vote for.

  • After you register and receive your password, you can log into the site, search for Nof60 (or go directly to the Nof60 page), and vote for it.

  • Note that there are three types of DVD packages you can vote for: Complete season sets, "best of" collections, and individual episodes. Please do not blindly check all three boxes; you want to demonstrate that you put thought into your votes. Personally, I can't imagine individual episodes being released, and "best of" collections seem unlikely, too. So I just voted for "Season Sets." Do what you think is best, but please, only vote for DVDs you would really buy.

  • You'll also see a "Comments" link. Clicking that will bring up a text box into which you can type a short note for the distributor. Here's your chance to tell Echo Bridge why Nof60 should be released on DVD. Remember, these folks are on our side! They sought me out to ask about fan interest in the series, so I'm sure they are genuinely interested in releasing it if they can make a business case for doing so. And they aren't the ones who have held up the DVD release all these years, so don't criticize them about that!

I encourage you to send this information to friends and family members who are Nof60 fans--but please be sure to send them to this page, not directly to Gord's site, so that they will understand the rules before they vote.

This is the best chance we've had to get Nof60 DVDs released since Alliance changed their minds a few years ago. Please go to TVShowsOnDVD.com now and let Echo Bridge know how you feel!
